Situated a mere 2 ½ hours drive from Johannesburg, the Waterberg Mountains are acclaimed by South African Tourism as “South Africa’s hottest bush destination… a glorious malaria-free district”.
Clifftop Lodge is situated on a cliff overlooking the Sterkstroom River in the Welgevonden Private Game Reserve. The lodge offers the seclusion of the African bush, yet with the small luxuries that make for a relaxing and invigorating game experience.
Within this conservation area is the privately owned game reserve Welgevonden. The result of a pioneering project begun in 1987 to return farmland to its original wild state, Welgevonden has grown to become one of South Africa’s premier privately held reserves. Ambitious game relocation efforts and careful ecological management have resulted in a reserve today that is home to the Lion, Leopard, Elephant, White Rhino, Cheetah, Wild Dog, Brown Hyena, 15 different types of antelope, and 30 other species of mammals.
Accommodation:
Accommodation is in 8 suites which each have a private deck with plunge pool and thatched sala. There are also indoor and outdoor showers.
The suites also have air conditioning, direct dial telephones, hairdryers, mini bars, room safes, separate bath and shower with bath consumables, tea/coffee making facilities, electric blankets, indoor and outdoor lounges, and viewing decks overlooking the cliffs onto Sterkstroom River.
Facilities:
Commanding a magnificent view of the Sterkstroom River valley, the saligna decks of the main complex are complemented by the rimless pool. Enjoy sundowners from an extensive bar, a sherry next to one of the many indoor fireplaces, or cocktails on the pool deck while watching the magnificent sunset.
In addition to the 22-seater boardroom, the lodge boasts a well-stocked library with Internet facilities for those wanting to catch up on emails. There are numerous “break-out” areas for work shopping and idea generation.
The Waterberg Biosphere’s approach to both conservation and community upliftment recently led to its recognition by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Activities / Game Drives:
Game viewing at the Clifftop Lodge in open vehicles affords guests the opportunity of viewing fauna and flora, whilst traversing the undulating hills, following river courses and open savannah plains. The Welgevonden Game Reserve is well stocked with lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, rhino, elephant, zebra, giraffe and plenty of other mammals, birds and trees.
Daily safaris depart in the early morning, stopping for refreshments en-route. Explore the beauty of the Welgevonden Private Game Reserve which is 37 500 hectares in size. Welgevonden Private Game Reserve lies in the Waterberg plateau, just north of Johannesburg, South Africa. Here guests enjoy unlimited traversing through the reserve and experience an environment where biodiversity conservation and game viewing are managed in harmony.
Our Afternoon Safari departs at 15h30 and allows guests the opportunity to spot the wide variety of animals which inhabit this Game Reserve.
